Analogous and complimentary colours
These are a few colour studies I prouduced at the start of my colour project. I created a compositon from a still life, made up of objects I had put together. These were just a few quick studies in which I used Complimentary and Analogous colours. These studies showed me how colours can create a soothing, calm outcome or a contrasting, bold one. With Complimentary colours, each colour is fighting for dominece therefore these colours can be used to create an eye-catching piece. On the other hand, Analougous colours can be used to create a calm, preacful piece, often used to create depth, warmth and coolness.

Colour theory
Pages based on red, blue, green, orange, yellow, black, purple, and white. To research what colour symbolizes and meanings of colour. It was interesting creating these pages because I became aware of many new meanings of what colour can be interpreted as. This was an important process for me because I wanted to gain a deeper, thorough understanding of colour.

Artist research
Henry Matisse is a great colour artist to research, with his use of complimentary and ananlouges colours, along with shape to see how he creates movement in his pieces such as 'The Snail'. I constantly kept referring back to my artist research because I wanted to get movement from my colour.

These are my final tonal strips. I created four in total in a mixture of tonal medias. I produced these compositions from the dance studio where I watched dancers produce a series of routines. I recorded their movements with my pencil and produced 8 line studies. I choose my four most successful ones to be my final pieces. 2xChalk and charcoal, 1xPaint and1xMixed media. Creating these strips was a great process because I was pushing media further, creating different marks and styles.

These are my final colour strips. I started my first piece with warm analogous colours. I wanted to improve my pieces step by step. My second one I used cool analogous colours and included pattern too. For my last two pieces, I wanted them to be creative, colourful and vibrant. I included several techniques such as markin making and dragging along with over and under painting. I was extremely pleased with the outcome of my pieces because you can clearly see the movement present. The colour makes your eyes move from one shape to another, and the techniques make it aesthetically pleasing.
This project was going to be continued into our next one. Were I am aiming to produce a final canvas.  This project was continued from my colour part 1 project. It was a really great, in-depth, project which I was pleased I would be able to extend it further.

These are a series of compositions I re-created from my favourite sections of my colour strips. However with these I Changed techniques and colours to get a completely different outcome. Using these compositions helped me figure out what a successful composition could be and what direction I wanted to take into my final piece.

A2 PIECES

These are a few of my A2 compositions. These were extended from my previous compositions in my sketchbook. I experimented with various styles, compositions, colour and techniques. Although not all my compositions were successful I learnt what techniques worked together, and what does not. These were great pieces to experiment on.

CHARCOAL PIECES

These are my first two charcoal compositions I moved onto after my A2's. Working in charcoal i felt I could work more freely with nothing restricting me.
For my first two I want to experiment with angles and composition. I created a number of quick compositional layouts in my sketchbook and I choose my most successful to move onto this larger size. moving on to this larger size allowed me to feel more comfortable with the thought of working on my canvas, because it was the largest I had ever worked. With my first composition on the left, I could still see that I was not working to my full potential. Therefore on my second piece I allowed myself to become more free and stepped my composition up to become a fuller more interesting piece, which showed the flow of the movement.

These are my two successful charcoal and chalk pieces. With these I became so much more expressive and started to really immerse myself in the work. Referring back to Twombly's expressive style. With these pieces I used the media to the best of it's potential. Using it by pressing hard or soft, on the side or at the tip, and using the chalk underneath or on top. Creating these pieces in charcoal helped me think of what style of painting I needed in certain areas, either that being under or over painting, dragging or mark making. Creating these two pieces was a very physical quite challenging and tiering process. It was hard applying the media in such an expressive way, however that is the way I really enjoy working.

What I found when creating these pieces is that I went back to what I do best. just allowing myself to become immersed in my work and enjoying the process!

FINAL CANVAS

This is my final outcome. To start my canvas I created a light layer of paint for my background. I then roughly drew out my composition with charcoal, and filled the shapes in with simple block light colour to see if my colour scheme would work. Once I was happy I had the correct colours in the right place i allowed them to dry. Once they had dried I started to paint over them. Going along I blended the colours together to try and add a flow to the canvas, subtly changing from one colour to another. I used many techniques on this canvas from blending, scrapping, dragging and mark making. The changes I made are documented thoroughly throughout my sketchbook, so I can see my progress. I believe the overall outcome for my canvas has been successful, and I am extremely pleased with it. I love the brightness and vibrancy and how dominent the overpainting is. I believe the outcome is successful because of it's strong links to my first colour project, Twombly and my charcoal pieces. You can see the depth as well as movement and that is what I wanted to achieve, I believe my canvas is individual and unique to me and the way I enjoy to work.
